Operation W.O.O.F. Raises $11,000 for New Police Dog

Lebanon, Pa. – The 2009 Leadership Lebanon Valley class raised $11,457.02 for the City of Lebanon’s newest police dog, Officer Friday.  The donation received from Operation W.O.O.F. will be used to offset the cost of the initial purchase and training of the dog, equipment used in the training process, and specialized equipment used for the K/9 vehicle and patrol duties

“The City of Lebanon and the Police Department are grateful that the Leadership Lebanon Valley class has chosen our new patrol dog as their service project,” said Chief Daniel Wright.  “Police Departments usually do not receive donations of this size.  Large donations usually come from large corporations.  We are honored that the Leadership Lebanon Valley class members adopted us for their project.  We also thank everyone in the community who purchased a chicken dinner, a t-shirt or simply made a donation.”

Leadership Lebanon Valley class participant Melissa Williams offered special thanks to The Hershey Company for making the largest donation to the project.  “The Hershey Company generously donated $3,000 to our project in support of the police dog. This donation really inspired us to push ourselves even harder in the last weeks of the project because we were that much closer to paying the entire cost of Officer Friday.  We thank Hershey for helping us reach our goal,” Williams said.

Officer Friday is cross-trained in narcotics detection. The use and sale of illegal narcotics is an on-going problem for many communities, and the new police dog assists officers in keeping illegal drugs off the streets.

The Leadership Lebanon Valley class hosted Operation W.O.O.F Day – a chicken barbeque fundraising event at the Lebanon Valley Mall in September.  More than 50 local vendors and social service agencies participated.  The class also sold t-shirts with the Operation W.O.O.F. logo. Dozens of area businesses placed donation cans at their cash registers.  Hoss’s Steak and Seafood restaurant hosted two fundraising dinner days.
